Randalls Island Park Alliance

Flower Power

In What's in Bloom on December 19, 2011 at 8:00 pm

INTRODUCTION: In 2009 we began planting the first of two wildflower meadows on Randall’s Island.  The first meadow is the entry way to the Freshwater Wetlands (16,000 square feet) and the other meadow at Hell Gate (9,000 square feet) faces Astoria.  Combined both feature over 25,000  Northeastern US natives; in addition over 3,000 pounds wildflower seed has been spread on both meadows.

NYC has lost 75% of its native plant species and Randall’s Island is committed to increasing our native plant communities.  Native plants produce breathable oxygen, help purify water, prevent erosion, impact climate change and ultimately affect our ecosystem.   Celebrating our environment and insuring its future is the goal of these two meadow areas.

In 2012 will add 4,000 square feet to the wildflower meadow at Hell Gate.  If you would like to be involved, please contact;  phyllis.odessey@parks.nyc.gov
