My name is Charlotte Israel, a 16-year-old sophomore at the Brearley School in New York City. On April 10th, my class, along with the sophomore class of the Collegiate School, came to Randalls Island and planted trees at Sunken Meadow. Roughly 100 girls and boys, together, with the well-needed help of the Randalls Island staff, we planted 58 trees. We were divided into groups of 7-8 people, each group led by a member of the staff. We bonded and discussed planting techniques as we helped replace and improve the landscape.

My group planted 5 trees altogether, 3 oaks and 2 lindens. We faced some difficulties with rocks, compact soil and tree placement; but by the last tree we used our newly acquired skills to correct our mistakes and it resulted in a very well planted (and straight) tree along with a tired but victorious group.

The Brearley and Collegiate Schools have many sporting events at the Sunken Meadow and it was nice to think that we would all be able to check on the progress of our handiwork. Garden work is not new to me. I greatly enjoy working in the garden in the summer with my mom. However I had never planted any trees before and I am now looking forward to possibly using my new abilities in the future. Overall, it was a great experience in which I made some new friends and helped my community. I would like to thank Phyllis Odessey and the Randalls Island staff for the wonderful opportunity.
