Our Expanding Universe

Edwin Hubble is generally credited with being the first person to establish the universe included other galaxies. Even though we  remain within our own universe, we are enlarging the world of Randall’s Island.

The Learning Garden began six years ago as a small garden for children.  It included a sensory section and a small vegetable patch.

Over the last two years things have changed expediently.  Our original 3,000 sq. ft has grown every year.  At the end of day on May 3, the square footage of the garden will equal 15,000 sq. ft.   Volunteers from Goldman Sachs will help us build the new section of The Learning Garden.

The new area will include a second rice paddy, six more raised beds, a new trellis and a gourd tunnel.  This latest section will have its own entrance.  In addition, the corn crib talked about in the blog “Fort Knox” will get a make-over.  We  hope it will be creature-proof and we will see a crop of corn for first time.

I always think it’s interesting to see the before.  Here are some shots.

and gourd tunnel is in place.

Although we embrace the old, this new tract, which will include the chicken coop,  is like a fresh beginning.
